About Northern
Northern is owned by DfT OLR Holdings Ltd (DOHL), which took over the operation of Northern on 1 March 2020, a subsidiary of the Department for Transport's public sector ownership group, 'DOHL'. DOHL is responsible for three railway companies, LNER, Northern Trains Ltd and SE Trains ('South East'). DOHL is committed to working closely with all aspects of the rail industry to ensure the continuity of essential passenger rail services. Northern provides mainly rural train services and some long distance train services. The main service areas are Cheshire, County Durham, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Northumberland, Teesside, Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire.Our Northern vision: The North plays a vital role in the North of England, connecting tens of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every day. Northern has many exciting projects and interests. These include: Continued introduction of new state-of-the-art trains, with maximum speeds of up to 100mph. Additional capacity provided by the new fleet A major deep cleaning programme for all trains New technology is being trialled to identify key congestion points to reduce overcrowding. Platform extensions are underway at 30 stations across the network to allow longer trains and improved journeys.
